Yu-Gi-Oh!

Yu-Gi-Oh! is a bit different than other animes that depict fights against evil, and not just because the "battles" are card games used with holograms. While characters are often killed in Digimon, Dragonball Z, Pokemon and Sailor Moon, deaths in Yu-Gi-Oh! are rare. The Japanese version is full of them, but since the English version is dubbed by 4Kids, many of these (even ones that involve falling) are censored, often with the substitute of the character being banished to the Shadow Realm, a dark shadowy dimension full of torture, and very similar to Hell (why they would pick such a realm as a censorship for death is unknown). Often the victim's soul will be sealed away to eternal torment, unless released. When it comes to speaking about souls, in Season 4 an evil stone called the Orichalcos (created by the Great Leviathan) takes the souls of the losers of duels, but they are all released later on.

This list will be divided into three sections: Imprisonments in the Shadow Realm (whether released or not), victims of the Orichalcos, and actual deaths.

Yu-Gi-Oh!

Shadow Realm

Imprisonment in the Shadow Realm is the same as eternal damnation, though one that the victim can be resurrected from.

1. Ghost Kaiba - After Yami Yugi defeated Kaiba, he used a Mind Crush on him to send his dark side (which then took physical form) to the Shadow Realm. Was later brought back by Pegasus.
2. Grandpa Solomon Muto - Soul taken by Pegasus using his Millennium Eye, and trapped inside a card, the inside of which is apparently like the Shadow Realm. Was later released by Pegasus once Yugi beat him.
3. Ghost Kaiba - After being defeated by Yami Yugi, he was banished back to the Shadow Realm by Yugi with another Mind Crush, this time with no hope for escape.
4. Panik - After being defeated by Yami Yugi, he tried to kill him with fire, but Yugi's Millennium Puzzle protected him, and he banished Panik to the Shadow Realm with a Mind Crush.
5. Mokuba Kaiba - Soul trapped in a card by Pegasus, just like Grandpa. Was later released by Pegasus after Yugi beat him.
6. Mugger - Soul banished to the Shadow Realm by Yami with a Mind Crush, after losing a card draw to him. This occurred in a flashback that takes place before the first episode.
7. Seto Kaiba - Soul trapped in a card by Pegasus after losing to him. Was later released by Pegasus once Yugi beat him.
8. Seeker the Rare Hunter - After being defeated by Yugi, Marik took control of his mind with his Millennium Rod and trapped his soul in the Shadow Realm.
9. Umbra - After being defeated by Kaiba in the tag team duel, his Shadow Box (synchronized with life points) reached zero and shattered the glass floor he was standing on, causing him to fall into the Shadow Realm. He activated a parachute, which caught on a pole, but was not moving afterwards, indicating that his soul was trapped in the Shadow Realm.
10. Lumis - Once it was clear Lumis didn't stand a chance, Marik took control of his mind with his Millennium Rod, and trapped his soul in the Shadow Realm; His body was not moving after Marik leaves.
11. Bonz - After being defeated by Yami Bakura, was trapped in the Shadow Realm, sucked into the ground by shadowy clouds. It is unknown whether he released him or not, but likely he either forgot or decided to leave them. (In the Japanese version, he sent Bonz, Sid, and Zygor to hell)
12. Sid - After Bonz was defeated by Yami Bakura, Yami Bakura trapped him in the Shadow Realm, vanishing him into shadowy clouds.
13. Zygor - After Bonz was defeated by Yami Bakura, Yami Bakura vanished all three thugs into shadowy clouds, trapping them in the Shadow Realm.
14. Marik's father - Was imprisoned in the Shadow Realm by Yami Marik, as shown in flashback set before the first episode. Did not return with all the others, as there may be a limit to how long one can be in the Shadow Realm before they can be released. (Note: The reason he does not return in the Japanese version is because in that version Yami Marik stabs him to death)
15. Mai Valentine - After Yami Marik defeated her in a duel, he trapped her soul in the Shadow Realm. She was later released after Yami Marik was destroyed.
16. Bakura - After Yami Bakura was defeated by Yami Marik, as part of their Shadow Game he vanished into the Shadow Realm; however, only his host, Bakura, went to the Shadow Realm, as Yami Bakura escaped to Yami (the Pharaoh)'s mind.
17. Mushara - While crossing a balance beam, did not cross it in the right way (did not put his left foot forward), was slashed by a statue, and fell into a pit of shadow. This occurred in a flashback that took place before the first episode.
18. Weevil Underwood - Soul trapped in the Shadow Realm by Yami Bakura. Was later released.
19. Rex Raptor - Soul trapped in the Shadow Realm by Yami Bakura. Was later released.
20. Mokuba Kaiba - Soul trapped in the Shadow Realm by Yami Bakura so Kaiba would duel him. Was later released.
21. Karim - Gave all his energy to Shada, depleting his diadankh energy and trapping his soul in the Shadow Realm until Zorc was destroyed.
22. Aknadin / Shadow Magus - Destroyed by the Blue Eyes White Dragon, trapping his soul in the Shadow Realm. Was released as the original Aknadin after Zorc was destroyed.
23. Hasan - Jumped in front of the guards to protect them from Zorc's attack, depleting his diadankh energy and trapping his soul in the Shadow Realm. His body was later destroyed.
24. Shada - Jumped in front of the Pharaoh to protect him rom Zorc's attck, depleting his diadankh energy and trapping his soul in the Shadow Realm, until Zorc was destroyed.
25. Isis - Her Winged Dragon Guardian of the Fortress was destroyed by Zorc, depleting her diadankh energy and trapping her soul in the Shadow Realm as she fell. Was released when Zorc was destroyed.
26. Shimon - Diadankh energy depleted when Zorc destroyed Exodia, trapping his soul in the Shadow Realm until Zorc was destroyed.
27. Seto - Diadankh energy depleted when Zorc destroyed his Blue Eyes White Dragon, trapping his soul in the Shadow Realm until Zorc was destroyed.

Orichalcos

1. Weevil Underwood - Defeated in a duel by Grerimo, and the Orichalcos took his soul. Was released when Grerimo was defeated.
2. Rex Raptor - Defeated in a duel by Grerimo, and the Orichalcos took his soul. Was released when Grerimo was defeated.
3. Grerimo - Defeated in a duel by Yami Yugi, and the Orichalos took his soul. Was presumably released when the Leviathan was defeated.
4. Maximillion Pegasus - Defeated in a duel by Mai, and the Orichalcos took his soul. Was released when the Leviathan was defeated.
5. Yugi Muto - Once defeated by Rafael in a duel, the Orichalcos tried to take Yami's soul, but Yugi sacrificed himself to save Yami, and his soul was taken instead. Was released during the fight with the Leviathan.
6. Rex Raptor - Defeated in a duel by Joey, and the Orichalcos took his soul. Was released once the Leviathan was defeated.
7. Weevil Underwood - Defeated in a duel by Yami, and the Orichalcos took his soul. Was released once the Leviathan was defeated.
8. Alister - Defeated in a duel by Kaiba, and the Orichalcos took his soul. Was released once the Leviathan was defeated.
9. Valon - Defeated in a duel by Joey, and the Orichalcos took his soul. Was released once the Leviathan was defeated.
10. Joey Wheeler - Defeated in a duel by Mai, and the Orichalcos took his soul. Was released during the fight with the Leviathan.
11. Mai Valentine - Defeated in a duel by Rafael, and the Orichalcos took her soul. Was released once the Leviathan was defeated.
12. Rafael - Tried to enter the duel with Dartz once he realized Dartz tricked him, but the Orichalcos took his soul. Was later released when the Leviathan was defeated.
13. Seto Kaiba - Defeated in a duel by Dartz, and the Orichalcos took his soul. Was released during the fight with the Leviathan.

Deaths

1. Cecelia Pegasus - Was killed by an illness before the events of the first episode.
2. Tristan Taylor - While he was the Cyber Commander in Yami Bakura's duel, was destroyed by Yami Bakura's White Magical Hat, sending him to the graveyard. Was revived by Yami using Monster Reborn.
3. Joey Wheeler - While he was the Flame Swordsman in Yami Bakura's duel, sacrificed himself to destroy the Man Eater Bug as part of a magic card. Was revived by Yami using Monster Reborn.
4. Iru - In the virtual world, was destroyed by a monster trying to attack Yugi. Was later revived by the Mystical Elf.
5. Joey Wheeler - In the virtual world, was destroyed when his Red Eyes Black Dragon was destroyed by the Mythic Dragon (specifically the head controlled by Gansley), bringing his life points down to zero. Was later revived by the Mystical Elf.
6. Mai Valentine - In the virtual world, was destroyed when her Harpie's Pet Dragon was destroyed by Gansley (as the Mythic Dragon), bringing her life points to zero. Was later revived by the Mystical Elf.
7. Mokuba Kaiba - In the virtual world, sacrificed himself to save Kaiba from Gansley's attack (as Mythic Dragon). Was revived by the Mystical Elf.
8. Marik's mother - Is shown in a flashback to have died shortly after giving birth to Marik.
9. Gansley - After being trapped in an isolated portion of the virtual world, was destroyed when Noah caused a satellite attack that blew up the fortress that the virtual world was in.
10. Crump - After being trapped in an isolated portion of the virtual world, was destroyed when Noah caused a satellite attack that blew up the fortress that the virtual world was in.
11. Johnson - After being trapped in an isolated portion of the virtual world, was destroyed when Noah caused a satellite attack that blew up the fortress that the virtual world was in.
12. Nesbitt - After being trapped in an isolated portion of the virtual world, was destroyed when Noah caused a satellite attack that blew up the fortress that the virtual world was in.
13. Lector - After being trapped in an isolated portion of the virtual world, was destroyed when Noah caused a satellite attack that blew up the fortress that the virtual world was in.
14. Noah Kaiba - Caused a satellite attack that destroyed the fortress the virtual world was in, destroying it and everyone in it. Noah remained behind to prevent Gozaburo from escaping. (Somewhat censored by characters speculating he saved his mind on a backup file)
15. Gozaburo Kaiba - Was destroyed when Noah caused a satellite attack that destroyed the fortress, deleting the virtual world and anyone in it. He somehow survived for a few moments to appear as a beast of flame in the real world and tried to eat the gang, but they escaped before he disappeared for good.
16. Yami Marik - Switched around with Marik, in a duel in which if one side loses the duel, the other vanishes into the Shadow Realm or is destroyed. Marik was now in control of the duel due to Yami destroying the Winged Dragon of Ra. Marik forfeited the duel to Yami, and Yami Marik was destroyed, exploding in a wave of energy and sending his soul to the Shadow Realm.
17. Anubis - Destroyed by Blue Eyes Shining Dragon (summoned by Yugi) with Shining Nova Attack. (This was in the movie)
18. Orichalcos Soldier - Defeated in a duel by Yami, and was destroyed in an explosion.
19. Great Leviathan - Destroyed by Yami using his powers, shrinking down to nothing and releasing Dartz from his control
20. Dartz - Sacrificed himself to awaken the Great Leviathan, giving up his soul; After the Leviathan's defeated, Dartz was released from his influence, and, still as a spirit, entered the afterlife
21. Ahmet - Eaten by a statue, turned into a monster after judging him as not pure enough.
22. Mahad / Dark Magician - Destroyed by the Blue Eyes White Dragon, under the control of Seto, who was possessed by the Shadow Magus.
23. Hasan - After his soul was sent to the Shadow Realm, his body was destroyed by Zorc. Presumably this killed him and his soul went to its resting place once released from the Shadow Realm.
24. Shadi - Possessed Hasan's body and jumped in front of the Pharaoh to defend him from Zorc' attack, destroying him.
25. Zorc - Destroyed by the Creator of Light, using only the rays of light from her eyes.
26. Yami Bakura - Merged with Zorc, and was simultaneously destroyed with him when the Creator of Light destroyed him.

Yu-Gi-Oh! GX

Duels

1. Ghost - after losing the duel a monster is absorbed and disappears
2. Jinzo - jinzo automatically destroys and jaden took out the letter and attacked and lost
3. Atticus Rhodes / Nightshroud - Jaden Won and survived the volcano and changed it in the dimension and Atticus returned to normal. Later revived by soul
4. Camula - lost because it absorbed the soul and disappears forever
5. Lyman Banner / Amnael - Jaden grabbed the book and banner disappeared by dust
6. Man Duelist - lost because of the demon
7. Robot - Jaden Win Duel
8. Sarina -disappears per room and the duelists escape for the soul of the mind
9. Nightshroud - Zane Trusdale win, Nightshround Died Forever
10. Aster Phoenix - Win Sartourius. Later revived by Duelists
11. Sartorius / The Light of Destruction - Win Jaden and destroyed by satellite and disappears forever
